Welsh food and drink delicacies earn protected status

Welsh food and drink delicacies earn protected status - GOV.UK

5 September 2026 · Liberty Lux News

Welsh gin, oysters and honey have been added to the UK list of protected food names. Dovey Native Botanical Gin, Pembrokeshire Native Oysters, Pembrokeshire Rock Oysters and Welsh Heather Honey can only carry those names if they meet the production rules and come from the places named.

The decision sits with the UK geographical-indication scheme, alongside Anglesey Sea Salt, Welsh Leeks, Traditional Welsh Cider and single-malt Welsh whisky.

Defra, the Wales Office and the Welsh Government announced it together. The point is to stop a protected name being used on a product that was not made to the standard.
