Wylfa named preferred site for a new nuclear station
The UK government put Anglesey first for a third large plant and opened talks with firms that could build it.
Wylfa on Anglesey is the government's preferred site for a third large nuclear power station in the UK, on the scale of Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C.
Ministers said a plant there could supply the equivalent of about 6 million homes for 60 years, as part of a plan for nuclear to provide up to a quarter of UK electricity by 2050.
Great British Nuclear had already taken Wylfa, and Oldbury in Gloucestershire, as possible sites, the first government land purchase for new nuclear since the 1960s. Wylfa sits on the coast, with cooling water and a workforce that already knows the industry.
Claire Coutinho, then energy secretary, said Anglesey's nuclear history made it the right place to go again. David TC Davies, then Welsh secretary, called it significant for jobs on the island, alongside the Anglesey Freeport, Holyhead funding and North Wales rail electrification.
Prospect and the Nuclear Industry Association backed a large station at Wylfa and told government to move at pace so the skills stay in Wales.
